About PYRO Division

 Who We Are

The PYRO Division is the unit representing the San Francisco North Bay region, including the Sonoma, Marin, and Mendocino Counties. The unit was formed  in 1975 and was named Marin County Division, but the name was changed to Carpenter Division in 1976. Finally in 1990, the unit received its current name, PYRO, after the Nitro class ammunition ship, the USS Pyro, which was laid down on 21 October 1957 at Bethlehem Steel Shipyard and launched on 5 November 1958. The ship was commissioned USS PYRO (AE-24) on 24 July 1959 at Norfolk Naval Shipyard, Portsmouth, Virginia. She was decommissioned on 31 May 1994, and our unit is proud to maintain the ship's bell.
